I make the distinction between &#8220;Live&#8221; and the &#8220;Live Cut&#8221; trees most people buy during the holidays which I call dead trees. When I planted them, it seemed like there was plenty of room between them the and the fence. They certainly gained some girth over the decades. I might also add that pine sap is a real problem. I had to spend about an hour cleaning a brand new shirt with WD-40, degreasers and a couple of machine washes.
